Bald faced hornet

This cutey pie is a bald-faced hornet. He came to visit me in my backyard the other day so I had to a take a few pictures of him.

Bald-faced hornets are easy to recognize because of their size and colours. They are atypically large and have a mostly black body and antennae with white front legs and face. Their wings are smoky.

But don’t be distracted by their dreamy eyes and soft gaze. Bald-faced hornets are aggressive and due to their smooth stingers, they can sting repeatedly. Their stings carry venom that makes the stings hurt, itch or swell for about 24 hours.
